Naruto is an anime with an uncountable number of characters as it spans over 25 seasons with both the series Naruto and Naruto Shippuden combined with the appearances of multiple characters with different personalities. Especially including the characters in the filler episodes that are not part of the original series. Therefore, as a beginner to understand the characters, a list of 10 important characters are given below;
1. Naruto Uzumaki
Naruto is the main protagonist of the show. He is teammates with Sasuke and Sakura to form team 7 in Ninja training. He is ostracized by the residents of the village hidden in the leaf due to carrying the ferocious nine tailed fox. Due to this he always strives to do his best and become the Hokage (head of the village).
In order to prove to the villagers that he is more than just a host of a beast. Naruto has the charm to convert anyone he meets into a comrade regardless whether they were a friend or a foe to begin with. His character is overly optimistic but deep down he has a lot of layers to his personality. He lives by his favorite quote 'Believe it' which helps him strive through with hard work.
2. Sasuke Uchiha
Sasuke is a teammate and comrade of Naruto who at one point becomes the antagonist. He has a very cold and introverted personality and can be said to be the exact opposite of Naruto. He possesses the special ability Sharingan in his eyes which is inherited only by his clan members.
From the start of the story it is evident that he intends to fulfill a goal and would do anything to achieve it. Unlike Naruto, Sasuke is naturally gifted which irks Naruto at times but along the way Naruto accepts him as his close friend and brother. Sasuke, despite straying away from his friends and comrades to achieve his goal, ultimately makes his way back to them.
3. Sakura Haruno
Sakura is the only female teammate alongside Naruto and Sasuke. When she joined the team her one and only goal was to be alongside Sasuke. Her character is almost annoying to the viewers at first but she will have great character development throughout the show. From being obsessed over Sasuke, she goes on to be a strong and skilled female medical ninja.
4. Kakashi Hatake
Kakashi, mostly known as Kakashi Sensei, is the teacher or trainer of team 7. He too has a very dark past and seems to have gone through a lot of losses in his life. He is introduced as a tough trainer who fails all of his students for being incompetent.
However, throughout the show team 7 would grow on him and he starts to genuinely care and train his 3 students.
He shows a particular interest in Sasuke and tries to keep him from straying away which often makes Naruto feel Sasuke is being favored over him. Kakashi sensei may seem too serious from the look of it but he has a goofy side to him too which is shown in later episodes of the show and his biggest hobby is reading adult novels.
5. Hinata Hyuga
Hinata comes from a prestigious ninja clan in the village. At the start of the show she may seem to be a timid and shy girl. She was sent to the Ninja academy because her family deemed her weak to be the heir of the clan and chose her younger sister over her. Hinata’s clan inherits the special ability known as Byakugan in their eyes.
It is evident from the start of the show that Hinata loves and admires Naruto after he protected her from bullies when she was a kid. She always admired how hardworking Naruto is and that made him her inspiration to never give up. Later on in the show she proves how strong she can be and make a name for herself.
6. Third Hokage
The third hokage is the third head of the village. His given name is Hiruzen Sarutobi who happens to be a peculiar character. He too has so many layers to his personality. In the beginning of the show, the third hokage may seem to be a fun loving old man but later in the show you could see why he was chosen as the head of the village. The third hokage was entrusted with taking care of Naruto after the passing of his parents. Although it may seem at times that he neglected Naruto he did look after and left a lasting impact on Naruto.
7. Gaara
Gaara is from the village hidden in the sand. He is also a host to a tailed beast and similarly ostracized by his village but unlike Naruto he has a gloomy and dark personality. He may appear in the first part of Naruto as a possible enemy but later on Naruto is able to work his magic through words and make him his biggest comrade.
Gaara in Naruto Shippuden will be the complete opposite of his character which seems like his true character that he has been withholding. Gaara's real character seems to be curious, childlike and sometimes oblivious to things people mean due to him being distant and lonely as a child from people, but he strives to build connections with anyone he meets after being inspired by Naruto.
8. Shikamaru Nara
Shikamaru may seem like an insignificant character at the start of the show. Later on he proves to be one of the biggest assets to Naruto along with being his best friend. He has the ability to manipulate shadows. Shikamaru's father is among the few people who didn't see Naruto as a beast and encouraged Shikamaru to think for himself which led to him being Naruto's real friend from the start. He is a smart and knowledgeable character yet he lets his laziness take over. He strives to lead a simple life and often quotes ' What a drag!', when something disturbs his time to himself.
9. Jiraiya
Jiraiya is like a father figure to Naruto and trains him to be the greatest ninja of all. He may seem like a weirdo at times but his skills and knowledge are unparalleled in the ninja world. Jiraiya is the author of the novels that Kakashi is obsessed with and always goes on about doing research for his books. His talent and wisdom often gets overlooked by his goofiness at times, especially by Naruto.
10. Orochimaru
Orochimaru is the main antagonist in the first part of the show. He later on changes his perspective when the show progresses. He was a student of the third Hokage when he was a sensei and teammate of Jiraiya. Orochimaru's character is too complex and it is hard to understand where his loyalty lies. He obsesses over living forever and transfers his soul from body to body to make sure he lives long. Orochimaru has devoted followers that are willing to offer their body as vessels to him. He has snake like features and often associated with snakes. Despite being an illustrated character he can give the chills to any viewer from his behavior.
