Attack on Titan takes place in a dystopian world where human kind is reduced to a few, due to the appearance of humanoid giants who feed on humans known as the titans, who seem to be not in a right state of mind.
Among these titans are nine titans who have the ability to shift between being a human to being in titan form and retain their consciousness. Long before the main characters of the story Eren, Mikasa and Armin came to be, there was Ymir, the original titan shifter.
The shifting ability was inherited from her who was able to turn into the first titan known as the founding titan after bonding with a spine like creature when her body was almost giving up. After her passing Ymir's soul split into nine titans.
Ymir passed on 13 years after acquiring the titan powers. Therefore anyone in future who possesses the shifting titan powers can't live longer than that and surpass her as she is the original titan. The shifting titans have the ability to see the past of its inheritors to have a better understanding of their causes. The nine titans are namely,
1. Founding Titan
Founding titan is the first titan and the titan Ymir inherits when she transformed after bonding with the spine like creature which could also be the matter of all things. Founding titan can only be inherited by descendants of the royal family, if not the bearer should be in contact with a royal family member to use its power.

2. Attack Titan
Attack titan is the titan the main character of the anime Eren Yaeger inherits. Attack titan comes closest to looking like a human in terms of body proportions and structure. Attack titan has the ability to visit not only the memories of the past inheritors like the other titans but also the future inheritors. He is also the only Titan to always side with Eldia.

3. Beast Titan
Beast Titan is inherited by Zeke Yaeger, the half brother of Eren. The beast titan is much taller than other titans and takes the shape of animals and appears to take on the form of an ape while being inherited by Zeke. Beast titan is also the only titan who can communicate with words while in titan form as opposed to the other eight titans who communicate with other titans by letting out a high scream.

4. Armored Titan
Armored titan is inherited by Reiner Braun in the series. The armored titan has an impenetrable armor like hardened skin on his body to protect himself from impending attacks, thus giving him high protection. Armored titan also retains more human-like features and takes on a shape similar to Reiner after shifting.

5. Colossus Titan
Colossus titan is the first titan the viewers get to see in the series. He was first inherited by Bertolt Hoover and later by Armin. Colossus titan is the biggest titan out of the nine that even stands taller than the walls surrounding Paradis island. He also emits a vast amount of heat that makes it impossible for any being to even be closer to the titan without being burned.

6. Jaw Titan
Jaw titan was first inherited by Marcel Galliard and later the titan fell into the hands of Ymir(not the original shifting titan Ymir) unexpectedly. Later the Jaw titan was inherited by Falco Grice. Compared to the other titans the Jaw titans take the smallest form. Therefore, it is in perfect size for quick attacks and is much faster than other titans. The Jaw of the titan has the ability to break any impenetrable substance with their jaw hence the name.

7. Female Titan
Female titan is inherited by Anne Leonhart. The female titan is the only titan to take on the form of a female figure. The female titan has an athletic build and is muscular. The scream of the female titan can summon hundreds of humanoid titans.

8. War Hammer Titan
War hammer titan is inherited by Lara Tybur and has been inherited by the Tybur family for many years. The war hammer titan appears to be white compared to other titans who retain the color similar to humans except the beast titan. This titan possesses the ability to harden its body to form any weapon. The war hammer titan can allow its inheritor to be away from its body to be safe unlike the other inheritors who have to stay inside the body of the titan in order to use its powers.

9. Cart Titan
Cart titan is inherited by Pieck Finger. The cart titan has high endurance and is suitable to carry out long missions. The cart titan crawls on all four limbs to move rather than walking hence the name Cart titan due to this it has low defense against attacks.
