Anime is derived from the word animation. The word anime can be used for any animation around the world but it mainly refers to Japanese Anime. A big difference you can see with Japanese style anime and Western style anime is that the former targets a young adult to an adult audience while western anime targets a young audience.
A main reason for this is the presence of war, violence and mature subject matter. It can be said that anime is made in animation form not to appease a young crowd but rather to create scenes with much more effects and spectacular feats that may seem impossible to execute in a live action production.
The plot line and stories featured in anime have a lot of psychological depth and delve into dark spaces while exploring the characters' individual stories. The villains in anime are much harder to understand than the protagonists. There's a vast collection of anime to suit different tastes of the viewers at any time.
Anime provides an escape to people to delve through a world that can't be seen in the real world and lets the viewer use their imagination. Anime can come from different genres from fantasy to action to even anime dramas suitable for teenage viewers.
Anime will be based on fictional, sci-fi, dystopian alternative universes or realities while some anime will be based on the real world starring ordinary characters that tells the story of an extraordinary journey so there's something for everyone to watch. Viewers who love animations as a kid may find Japanese anime to be appealing to their taste.
Anime productions are created through a combination of graphics, cinematography and characteristics along with other mediums. Back in the days anime were only popular in Japan and included a lot of cultural references all to suit the Japanese market but today Anime has a fandom called Otaku spreading across the world.
The first anime was made back in 1917 by Commercial Productions. After 1945 Japan became the second largest anime producer in the world behind the USA. The characteristic anime art style came to popularity in the 1960s.
Gegege no Kitaro and Sazae were some of the famous anime back in 60s with Sazae holding the guiness record for longest broadcast for 45 years. In the 1980s, a visual quality renewal of anime took place. Director Hayao Miyazaki who won an Oscar for his animated movie ‘Spirited Away' is one such figure responsible for this renewal.
The anime style that we see today is much more enhanced and visually pleasing in its effects. Some famous anime through the years are:
